The Gardens of Castle Rock in rural Goodhue County has quietly become one of the Northfield area’s premier summer music destinations, attracting respected regional and national touring artists while maintaining an intimate, listener-focused atmosphere.
Now in its fourth full summer season after beginning with a small trial run in the fall of 2022, the Good Times at the Gardens series has grown into a 13-week Wednesday night tradition. According to owner Glenn Switzer, the goal has always been simple: put the music first.
“We care about the music,” Switzer said. “It’s a lot more than just an open mic night.”
The series, coordinated by musician and music facilitator Brian Halverson, has built a reputation among performers for its professional sound, attentive audiences, and unique outdoor setting. Halverson said the venue has become a valuable routing stop for touring artists traveling between greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities.
“We know we’re not the drive-by place,” Halverson said. “People plan ahead. They look at the schedule and come for the music.”
Despite weather-related cancellations this season, including shows by Dan Israel and the Zillionaires, the concert series continues to attract strong crowds. Recent performances by The Tony Cuchetti Band and jazz vocalist Deb Briggs highlighted the diversity of acts featured each summer.
One of the season’s most anticipated return engagements belongs to Minnesota singer-songwriter and guitarist Erik Koskinen, who will perform Aug. 19. Koskinen appeared at the Gardens last summer and recalled the experience fondly.
“I enjoyed myself very much,” he said.
Known for his acclaimed songwriting, distinctive baritone guitar work, and production work at his Minneapolis studio, Real-Phonic Records, Koskinen praised the venue’s atmosphere and craftsmanship.
“I like to see all the woodwork that gets done there,” he said. “I like to walk around.”
The series continues July 28 with The New Havoline Supremes, fronted by Northfield favorite Mary Cutrufello, as organizers look to build on a tradition that has become one of the region’s most popular summer music gatherings.
