Northfield residents will join voters across Minnesota today for the state primary election, a key step in determining which candidates will advance to the November general election. Polls across the city will be open from 7am until 8pm.
Election officials are encouraging voters to verify their polling location before leaving home. Residents can find their assigned precinct and view their sample ballot through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s polling place finder at https://pollfinder.sos.mn.gov/
Northfield’s City Clerk’s Office reminds voters that Minnesota offers Election Day registration, allowing eligible residents who are not yet registered to sign up at their polling place. Those registering on Election Day must provide proof of residence, as outlined by state election requirements.
For voters who prefer not to vote at the polls, absentee voting has been available since late June. Absentee ballots that have not yet been mailed may be delivered in person to the Rice County Government Services Building in Faribault or the Dakota County Administration Center in Hastings.Ballots will be accepted until 8pm.
Because Northfield spans both Rice and Dakota counties, some election administration details vary depending on where a voter lives. Officials advise residents to check their registration status and polling location ahead of time to avoid delays.
The primary election is often marked by lower turnout than the general election, but local officials stress that it plays a critical role in shaping the choices voters will have in November. The winners of today’s contests will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.

Election information, registration tools, polling place lookups, and sample ballots are available through the City of Northfield and Minnesota Secretary of State election websites.
