The Community Action Center will turn recycled and unexpected materials into high fashion tonight as the fourth annual Runway Revival fundraiser takes over Carleton College’s Weitz Center.
Runway Revival began as a way to raise awareness of the CAC’s Clothes Closet store and has grown into one of the organization’s signature summer events. Senior Director Anika Rychner said the original idea was simply to showcase the Clothes Closet, where anyone can shop and where proceeds support CAC programs. From there, organizers developed the idea of a fashion show featuring clothing created from recycled and upcycled materials.
This year’s theme is “Wild,” giving designers plenty of room for interpretation. Creations include a dress made from deconstructed aluminum cans arranged to resemble scales and Rychner’s own wildfire-inspired jacket made from red mesh onion bags collected through the CAC food shelf.
The event has also expanded this year to include its first youth showcase. Nine young designers under the age of 18 will present their work, followed by an adult showcase featuring 22 pieces. The entire program will be presented bilingually in English and Spanish.
Another change will allow the designers themselves to tell more of the story. Pre-recorded interviews with each artist will be played during the show, explaining what their pieces are made from and what inspired their creations.
Money is raised through sponsorships, ticket sales and a raffle featuring items connected to CAC programs. Proceeds support the organization’s work, including its food and housing programs, menstrual-equity initiative and a new diaper-equity initiative being launched with the Northfield Rotary Club.
Doors open tonight at 6:30 at the Weitz Center, with the runway show beginning promptly at 7:15. Tickets will be available at the door, space permitting.
