A water main break in Northfield has created a sinkhole and forced the closure of a section of Prospect Drive while city crews work to repair the damage.
According to the City of Northfield, the break occurred in the 1000 block of Prospect Drive, where the resulting sinkhole has caused enough damage to require road reconstruction.
Prospect Drive is currently closed from Prairie Street to approximately 300 feet east of Prairie Street. Traffic is being detoured around the work area using Prairie Street, Lia Drive and Lia Court.
City officials say residents in the immediate area will be notified if their water service is disrupted. Crews anticipated restoring water service by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 22nd.
The road is expected to reopen within the next few days, although paving will be completed at a later date as part of the reconstruction project.
The city is reminding motorists to slow down and use caution when traveling near construction areas. Drivers should never attempt to go around barricades or enter a road that has been closed with barriers or traffic cones. The city has not announced a specific date for the completion of the road reconstruction.
