Northfield woman’s “simple recognition” influences Northfield youth for decades
Sometime after the 10 o’clock news, a Northfield woman combs the local paper to find students to recognize. Lois Stratmoen has written a note to each Northfield student who’s been recognized for their accomplishments for more than 20 years. She explained that through her congregation, which has a large number of young people and with 2 sons in Northfield schools over the years, “we became aware through that of what fun it was to be in contact with the young people and how much of an influence you can have on them if you supported them and responded to them”. It could be for sporting events or academics. She said she may have 30 or 40 kids to write to at one time, “and we just think it’s important that they know that, other than their own families, there are other people in the community who notice what they are doing and want to support them”. Lois says, “and we have had young adults who have come back later on and who have said ‘I remember’ the support that you gave to me as a young person and I want you to know how important that was to me at the time”. She’s never kept track of the time it’s taken her to write all those notes and adds that it’s time well spent. She cuts out the newspaper article and includes it with her note. She says sometimes parents and kids aren’t even aware that they made the paper. Take time to listen to the entire interview on kymn.net that includes her college days as the only female in her math and engineering classes and why you see her walking every day all over Northfield.
