Nisbit pleads Not Guilty to murder

Jason Nisbit pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, to charges of First Degree premeditated murder and NisbitSecond Degree murder with intent – not premeditated.  He’s the Faribault man accused of killing 26 year old Chelsea Martinez of Ohio a year ago.  Nisbit was arrested in August of last year after leading law enforcement to her body in Shager Park.  According to the criminal complaint he admitted to killing her.  Martinez was a troubled young mother of 3 who, Nisbit says, came to Minnesota to discuss suicide with him after they’d met on the internet.  For now, a settlement conference is scheduled for September 27th.  Nisbit remains in the Rice County jail on a million dollar bond.  Nisbit Grand Jury indictment

Council fishing for more options to Fishing Ordinance

The Northfield Council chose to table the Fishing Ordinance as they tackle balancing the rights of those who fish and the rights of those who eat.  The conundrum comes from some of those casting for fish, catching the umbrellas of Froggy Bottoms.  Owner Laurie Hoheisel cites safety as her main concern.  She’s afraid someone’s going to get hooked and then who’s on the hook for any injuries?  Police Chief Monte Nelson and City Attorney Chris Hood sought input from the DNR, who did tell them they could somewhat limit the fishing area.  Nelson added,”one of the changes they suggested in our Ordinance instead of saying IN the river walk area, they wanted it to say FROM the river walk area so that it was clear we’re not trying to regulate the water way”.  They thought they’d found a solution by creating a buffer zone of 70 feet from Froggy’s property.  The total regulation would be about 100 feet or 8{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} of the river area according to Chief Nelson.  Several council members wanted other options.  Audience member Brian Kruse says that area is the best place to fish and urged, “before you decide to close any area down to fishing, please reconsider other means of precautions whether it be a safety net or even maybe a privacy fence”.  Two other family members spoke. Council also questioned Chief Nelson on enforcement.  He said, “we try and deal with it on a complaint basis so that we’re not down there just being accused of harassing fisherman”.  In a 4 to 2 vote they chose to postpone the 2nd reading until their next meeting instructing staff to come back with options such as an adjusted buffer zone, prohibiting only during dining hours or when people are present. Mayor Graham spent time talking with those fishing and took some video.  He said yesterday that the issue is “sensitive”.   Video of the meeting is on the City’s website.

Northfield Officers recognized for Lifesaving

Prior to the meeting, two Northfield Police Officers received Life Saving Awards.  In April, Steve Klostermeier and Drew Wierson were called on report of a 35 year old man in cardiac arrest.  Upon arrival Wierson took over CPR from the man’s wife, Klostermeier deployed the AED and administered several shocks to man.  In a letter to Police Chief Nelson, Emergency Room Dr. Fisher wrote, “your officers were absolutely instrumental in the positive outcome of this patient. I can confirm that they

used the AED appropriately and performed CPR exceptionally.  Their actions were crucial in making sure the patient survived”.  Officer Wierson is also a neighbor to man.  Nelson said, “Officers Kostermeier and Wierson didn’t just answer another medical, they saved a neighbor, a friend and gave a father a chance to make a full recovery and come home to his family”.  Nelson recognized Canvas Church who supplied the Police Department with 4 AED’s last year.  Each squad that goes out is now equipped with an AED.
