Soggy start to school

As social media exploded with photos of kids first day at school, the skies exploded with more rain!  It was a soggy start to the new school year and, as always, there’s a learning curve at the beginning of each school year as we get used to school buses and children on the road.  Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson said every year they get the same complaints about traffic issues including ignoring crossing

guards and speeding.  Nelson said “without fail” the most guilty are the people bringing their kids to and from school.  He added that despite all the warnings on buses, people violate the stop arms.  When you see that orange flag of a crossing guard, you also need to stop.  There’s a new crossing at Arbor Street on hwy 246 at the Northfield Middle School which means a big change in flow and speed.  And Hwy 3 is all open now at 3rd street.  Crews will be back the week of September 12th to install a pedestrian triggered flashing light.

Northfield Council tackles Fishing Ordinance [again]

The Northfield City Council meets tonight with a full agenda.  They’ll hold a public hearing on turning back the 4.6 acres of the more than 40 acres of tax-forfeited land the City acquired in Fargaze Meadows.  Items on the Regular agenda include approval of the preliminary tax levies for the EDA and HRA, a Mayor and Council compensation increase and the Fishing Ordinance which has met with some resistance from fisherman.  Police Chief Monte Nelson worked with the DNR and civil and criminal attorneys on language and ease of enforcement.  An option he’s putting forth would provide a No Fishing zone that would start on the north end of the Riverwalk 10 feet north of the light pole, providing a 35 foot “buffer” to the Lily Padio seating area.  The total length of actual Riverwalk closed to fishing would be approximately 65 feet.  This zone is about 37 feet shorter than previously proposed.   City Administrator Ben Martig will be sitting in for Mayor Graham throughout the election season.

Five fail to “move over” for flashing lights

Minnesota’s Ted Foss Move Over Law  was named in honor of the State Patrol trooper who was killed while on the shoulder of I-90 in Winona in 2000.  Northfield Police Sgt. Kevin Tussing reports that Northfield and Dundas Officers worked in conjunction on August 31st from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. giving extra traffic enforcement focusing on the Ted Foss Move Over Law. Their focus was on Highway 3 between Northfield, Dundas and south to Rice County Road 8. During this time the two officers made 21-traffic stops, issued 8 citations, including 5 for failing to move over, 1 for speeding, 1 for no seatbelt and 1 for illegal window tint.  When there are flashing lights of emergency vehicles, it is the law that you must move over a lane if possible.  The full press release with further information:  TedFossDay.docx

Passing Zone gets another shot on AGT as Wild Card tonight

Two weeks ago, the Passing Zone was passed over on America’s Got Talent, but I just received word from former Northfielder, Jon Wee, that they’re back.  They’re the Judges’ Wild Card choice, and will perform tonight in the Semi-Finals.  In an email Wee said they’re very excited, and have an excellent performance planned.  I will be talking with him later today and will post that interview as soon as possible!
