An early afternoon crash takes the life of a Faribault man. At 1 o’clock yesterday the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, Kilkenny Fire/Rescue and North Ambulance were dispatched to a crash in the 8000 Block of Dodd Blvd., southwest of Shieldsville. Deputies found a 2012 Ford pick-up truck and a 1998 Honda Civic in the south ditch. Both vehicles sustained severe damage. The driver of the Honda, 28 year old Christopher Chappuis, had been ejected and was pinned underneath the Ford pick-up. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up, 42 year old Jason Holicky, was transported by ambulance to Allina Hospital in Faribault with non-life threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation indicates that the Honda had been traveling west on Dodd Road, lost control in a curve and crossed over into the
eastbound lane, colliding with the eastbound truck. The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and a MN State Patrol reconstructionist. Fatal Crash Press Release 09012020
No vote on barriers… for this year
No pedestrian barriers will go up this year on the 4th street bridge over the Cannon. Four alternatives were presented to the Northfield City Council that included types of barriers and whether to place them on both sides or only on the south side. Northfield Councilor Zweifel moved the motion for the south side only with parking bumpers and delineators at a cost of $8,000. C. Peterson White brought up that the transmission of covid in an outdoor setting is much less than what was thought when they started the conversation, however, she believes there is an accessibility issue, saying, “but this may or may not be the time to attempt to solve that problem. I think it’s where I’m landing right now because I am not sure that we are going to be able to arrive at a really excellent solution”. She felt the Council needs to accommodate fishing on the southside. C. Grabau said, “I do have some concerns about switching it up again this late in the season and worried that it might cause some confusion and therefore safety issues. I’m wondering if we should pause, rethink if we need to do this next season or not”. She too brought up that the transmission of covid by walking past those fishing on the bridge is also far less than what was first thought. C. Ness said, “I too am against this. There’s a huge outcry against doing anything on the bridge. People are sort of mixed on closing Water St., which we did, but they say don’t, don’t do this, that adds into my decision”. Mayor Pownell said the timing of this isn’t right this late in the year as there’s not the fishing off the bridge that there was in the Spring. Zweifel withdrew her motion and that was the end of it, until next Spring. Pownell and Administrator Martig were in studio this morning. That interview is HERE. Water St. at Bridge Square will close through November 15th. More on that tomorrow.
DJJD Horseshoe hunt begins with a surprise
And the Defeat of Jesse James Days Horseshoe Hunt has begun! Cluemaster Tim Freeland said there’s a total of $1,000 to give away this year. The first clue dropped at 7 o’clock this morning. Find it on our website. KYMN’s Jeff Johnson will be announcing it on air at 7am each morning till it’s found. Freeland had a surprise, he’s hidden 20 horseshoes this year. You’ll get $20 if you find the small horseshoe. You’ll know it as there is an official tag on them that will tell you exactly how to collect the $20. You don’t need your button registered for the $20 horseshoes, but for the big one, worth $620, you do. The four sponsors include Professional Pride Realty, Edina Realty, Hometown Credit Union and Tim Freeland. All the rules are at djjd.org. Listen to Freeland’s full interview HERE on the history of the horseshoe, his involvement and something about being a ninja!
