By Teri Knight, News Director

The man found in Cannon Lake yesterday morning has been identified as 84 year old James R. Frederick of Faribault. Rice County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the 3000 block of Cannon Lake Tr. in Wells Township to assist a person looking for their father. A pair of boots were noticed floating in Cannon Lake away from the shore. The Rice County Dive Team was paged and Deputies commandeered a nearby boat. They soon located an adult male in the lake. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary investigation found no trauma and no foul play is suspected at this time.  The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Rice County Coroner’s Office.

City of Nfld will seek bids on solar

The City of Northfield received a grant in December 2019 through the Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) to assist with funding an assessment of on-site solar potential in Northfield with a focus on City owned buildings and properties.  Ted Redmond, from paleBLUEdot, presented a summary to Council this week. This comes from the Council’s Strategic Plan under Climate Action goals. Administrator Martig said, “they identified some priority facilities that not only would significantly reduce the carbon footprint but also might return it’s own investment in the cost”Some buildings included the community pool, the NCRC and Community Action. There are also some private businesses interested. Redmond identified three scenarios with varying degrees of cost and savings. He said this is an opportune time for installation as costs are down and a tax credit through the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit for residents and commercial businesses is available now through 2022.  He also suggested, “would recommend trying to maximize that by exploring, implementing a group purchase campaign for instance, as an opportunity to really leverage reducing the costs of solar through large purchasing power and taking advantage also of the tax credits”. Project Coordinator Beth Kallestad will go out for RFP’s and look at financing options. Cost varies considerably on depending on how many buildings they would utilize for solar. Anywhere from $2 to $5 million.  Redmond’s presentation: 2 – Northfield Solar Presentation_City Council (2)

Family/student/teacher mtgs start an unprecedented school year start

“We had over over 90% of our families attend a family conference either in person via video conference or on the phone”Northfield Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann. He added, “we heard from families about how their Summer has gone. We were able to share some information with families about how to access some of the tools that the school has. I think that goes to show it’s a great partnership. We had a lot of great positive feedback about those family conferences”It was a week long opportunity to help students and families adjust to a very unusual start

KYMN’s Election Guide to local elections to launch Monday

This year KYMN is excited to feature our 2020 Election Guide with information on over 20 candidates in local elections in the Northfield and Dundas area. Project Leader Logan Wells had this to say, “finding information on candidates in local elections can be incredibly challenging even for those active in politics. So when I set out with this idea, I wanted to find a way to help people learn about the names on the ballot and in a simple way but also in a way they knew could trust and from a source they could trust”.  You’ll be able to find information on the candidates for State Senate, State Representative, Northfield Mayor and City Council, Dundas City Council, Rice County Commissioners. [Note: Northfield School Board candidates will be coming]. The election guide will launch on Monday on our website, kymnradio.net. The Election Guide button is in the upper left hand corner of the front page. Special thank you to Logan Wells for all his work on this!
