Task force apprehends major suspected drug dealer; Times and hours set for Township annual meeting, elections; Carleton men’s basketball opens the NCAA Tournament today

Coming on the heels of a report discussing the many successes of the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task

English
Force earlier this week, Task Force Commander Scott O’Brien announced yesterday that a major area dealer of methamphetamine has been apprehended and charged in Rice County Court.

According to a statement issued by the task force, task force agents have been conducting a narcotics investigation over the last several months regarding large amounts of methamphetamine being transported and sold in the area by Cedric Antonio English, age 50, of Owatonna.

In January, Agents arranged a controlled purchase of approximately an ounce of methamphetamine from English. During that investigation, it was learned that English was selling controlled substances in several communities in the area and had an active Department of Corrections warrant for his arrest.

On Tuesday, Task Force agents received information that English was in the City of Faribault. His vehicle was located, and Faribault Police Officers initiated a felony stop. English and a female driver were detained and arrested without incident.

A search warrant was obtained and executed on the vehicle, and authorities seized 280 grams of methamphetamine, with a street value of approximately $16,800. Multiple scales, clean baggies and two .22 Caliber handguns were located with the drugs in a bag on the passenger floor where English was sitting. They also seized a loaded .38 Special handgun in passenger side glove compartment that was within reach of English during the arrest. A fourth handgun was found in the trunk of the vehicle.

English was found to have approximately $4,000 in cash on his person at the time of the arrest. The money has been seized as suspected profits from the sale of controlled substances.

Mr. English has been charged in Rice County for 1st Degree Aggravated Controlled Substances crimes and as a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Knights will play their first tournament game in 13 years today

Yesterday, the Carleton College men’s basketball team arrived in Wheaton, Illinois for the NCAA Division-III Men’s Basketball Tournament.

After winning the MIAC regular season title outright for the first time in a century, Carleton won the MIAC tournament on Sunday defeating St. John’s 86-76 and capturing the conference’s automatic bid to the tournament.

This has been a remarkable season for the Knights. Head Coach Ryan Kershaw was hired in April after Guy Kalland, the winningest coach in school history, retired. Kershaw, who had been an assistant coach on the team for nine years, took a team with all the right components – talent on the offensive and defensive sides of the court, experienced upper classmen and solid leadership – and guided them to a school record 22 wins in the regular season.

Senior forward Jeremy Beckler was named All Conference for the third consecutive year, and after earning an Honorable Mention last year, Sophomore point guard Luke Harris was named All Conference as well. Kershaw was named the MIAC Coach of the Year.

The coach said any honor he has been given this year is because of the people on his team.

“So, it’s truly a team. And again, as I’ve said before, I’m so fortunate to have such a great group this year. It’s really been a fun, unselfish, high character group. Honestly, it’s a coach’s dream from that standpoint. My job is to stay out of the way, and not screw it up. And you know, I would say that I’ve done a decent job of that.”

The Knights will play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years this afternoon, facing a tough and experienced team from St. Norbert College. Kershaw said St. Norbert’s has made a habit of getting to the tournament over the years and will play a tough and physical style of basketball. He said his team is excited for the experience of playing in the tournament, but that enthusiasm won’t cloud their desire to keep playing.

“It’s going to be fun, and we want to enjoy the experience, but we’re going [out there] to be competitive and to win games. And so, you know, we’ll certainly have our hands full with that, but it’s a great opportunity that we’re all looking forward to.”

The Knights will face off against St. Norbert’s at 4:15 this afternoon. Should they win, they will face either Wheaton College or Ilinois College tomorrow night at 6:45. The games will be live streamed on the Carleton Athletics Men’s Basketball website.
