Today we are reviewing what is being proposed in the Activities package of budget reductions, which includes items like sports, band, and orchestra. Unlike the other department proposals, which consist mostly of reductions, activities consist primarily of an increase in fees and other prices. Some items being proposed include a 10% increase in Middle School and High School activity fees. The family cap on activity fees will also increase from $1,000 to $1,150. Additionally, the district will now begin passing on credit card fees to the user.
Here’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matt Hillmann:
“We have an increase in fees. There certainly is a way to relieve or waive those fees for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, depending on the fee.” – Dr. Matt Hillmann, Northfield Schools Superintendent of Schools, KYMN News Special
Additionally, some programs are being eliminated based on low interest and enrollment. You can find the full packet of budget recommendations on our website.
On Thursday next week, the school district is hosting a public forum about the budget reductions. Next week, we will not be covering a daily story about the school’s budget, but we will cover the final two packages of proposals before Thursday, which include the Special Services Department and the District Services.
