Rice County Open Books Meeting Today; An Opportunity To Ask Questions With the Tax Assessor

By Logan Wells, News Director | Logan@kymnradio.net

The Rice County Open Books meeting is today. The meeting is an opportunity to have a one-on-one discussion with the Rice County Tax Assessor about issues with market value/assessment of your home and/or property. The assessor can also offer advice on whether you should appeal the valuation of your home. Rice County Tax Assessor Joshua Scheon says that the appeal process is not to dispute the taxes calculated, but rather to determine the value of your property, and thus how much you owe in taxes. Schoen said to determine if you have a good case for an appeal, you should start by reviewing realtors’ websites and the county’s website: Beacon

“I guess I would take a look at the market. I’d go see if there’s a realtor listing website and look up some properties that have sold that are similar to your property.” – Joshua Schoen, Rice County Tax Assessor, on the KYMN Morning Show

He also recommends checking your home’s record on Beacon to ensure all the information is correct. After completing the basic research, Schoen said that people should contact his office to begin discussing if they have a good case:

“And then I’d contact our office and speak to one of our appraisers. And usually, the processes will zero in when we do mass appraisal, but when we get appeals, we’ll zero in more on that property. Try to find those comp sales and then we want to, you know, visit the property, make sure that we have the right information.” – Joshua Schoen, Rice County Tax Assessor, on the KYMN Morning Show

The window for appeals is open now but will be closing soon. For residents of Forest Township, Shieldsville Township, and Wells Township, the window to file your appeal closes this week:
