Earth Day is this week! And in the lead up to Northfield’s Earth Day celebration on Saturday, KYMN is covering some of the Environmental Do Gooders in Northfield.
Today we are talking about Clean River Partners. Based out of Northfield, the organization’s goal is to protect waterways and in particular, the Cannon River watershed by working to bring many different partners and groups to help preserve the river. Executive Director Jennifer Tonko says that the organization works to help educate and provide resources for those interested in conservation practices:
“We do a lot of work with farmers in our area, helping them take the next step toward conservation and more sustainable practices. Agriculture is about 50% of the land use in this in this area. So what farmers do matters a lot, and there are a lot of farmers doing a lot of really good things, which is awesome.” – Jennifer Tonko, Executive Director of Clean River Partners.

Tonko says that the organization also works with people who live in cities and what they can do to help the Cannon River, including rain gardens, clearing storm drains, and raising awareness.
“a rain garden that can be tremendously helpful, especially as we’re getting more and more of these extreme weather events. Not putting fertilizer on your lawn or reducing that being really smart about how you do. That and keeping your lawn clippings up on your lawn; not spraying them out into the street.” – Jennifer Tonko, Executive Director of Clean River Partners.
