The Northfield City Council meets tonight for a regular meeting. The council has postponed its meetings by one week due to the first day of school last Tuesday.
The council will hear a presentation on the Downton Flood Improvements and Properties at Risk for Flooding. In 2020, the City received a grant from FEMA to conduct a study of the Cannon River and begin building a plan for what infrastructure projects would be needed in future years regarding funding. The study identified 13 properties at risk for flooding and determined the necessary infrastructure. Since then, several projects have been completed, and in 2026, more will be achieved via grant funding. No action is expected from the council; the item is just for information.
The Council will then continue a discussion that began in August regarding the city’s current trash removal contract with DSI, which expires at the end of the year.
The Council will consider the first reading of an ordinance to set standards for water utility submetering in Northfield. The ordinance is developed in part to address concerns from residents in Viking Terrace about transparency in their utility bills.
The council meeting will conclude with the first reading of ordinances regarding the Gas Service Franchise Fee and Electric Service Franchise Fee in Northfield. Franchise fees are how the city currently pays for road construction projects and in the current plan every 5 years the city is set to update the fee rate.
The public is welcome to attend in person or watch online. To watch online, go to northfieldmn.gov and click the “Agenda & Minutes” button in the middle of the home page. From there, find tonight’s meeting date to watch, as well as a copy of the agenda and other meeting documents.

Tonight’s meeting takes place at 6pm in the Council Chambers of the Northfield City Hall.
