Welcome back to this week’s edition of the Raider Sports Highlight, where we take a look at one of the teams or players and what they are up to this season.
Today, we are meeting the Raider Bowling team. The team is coming off a successful year, having qualified for state early in the season, won the conference tournament, and placed sixth at state. However, for this year, the team is quite a bit younger, which presents a new set of challenges. Leo Sahlin is the Captain of the Team this year, and he said he is thinking longer than just this year:
“This year, I’ve already said we have a really young core of bowlers. And I think this year, it’s really important to just get those bowlers some experience bowling on varsity, help them improve their games. Because maybe we won’t win the most matches this year, but I wanna be winning matches next year, and I wanna win the year after that.” – Leo Sahlin, Captain of the Raiders Bowling Team, on KYMN’s Raider Wrap
Listen to the News:
Sahlin and Coach Gary Greenlund noted that this year, the team is made up of ten members, with only five able to bowl during a game, which presents a particular challenge for the season, here’s Coach Greenlund:
“So we struggled with deciding if we should have just a varsity team with 10 bowlers or have JV and varsity both. We decided to have both a varsity and a JV. And because there are only five on a team, there isn’t any room for people.” – Gary Greenlund, Head Coach of the Raiders Bowling Team, on KYMN’s Raider Wrap t
They noted that if a member of the team was absent from the varsity or junior varsity, two frames of the game would receive a zero with no one to play. However, the team decided to focus on having the two teams to help grow and develop the young players.
You can hear KYMN’s full conversation with Sahlin and Greenlund on our website under the Raider Wrap tab.
Best of luck to the Raider Bowling Team This Season
