It’s Fire Prevention Week, which means the Northfield Area Fire Department is set to host its open house this evening. This Biennial event includes a series of fun and free activities for the whole family, with a focus on Fire Prevention.
One of the main events includes a demonstration of how the department responds to a car accident and safely removes a person from the vehicle. Here’s Fire Chief Tom Nelson:
“We’ll have a junk vehicle there, and so everyone kind of gathers around at a safe distance, and we walk through what do we do if we need to get someone out of a car that’s been crashed?” – Tom Nelson, Northfield Area Fire Chief on KYMN In The Morning
Other activities included getting to see the department’s fire trucks up close, training on using a fire extinguisher, and a helicopter fly-in.

However, the main event centers around a tradition that has lasted for 30 years and serves both as a demonstration and training exercises for the firefighters. Here’s Nelson describing it:
“They come in with their big propane truck, and they hook up this thing that looks like a tree. And it has holes in it on each end, and then they turn on the propane, and we light it, and it roars, and it lights up the sky on the 5th Street Bridge. And then we have a crew that comes with hose lines and walks up and then turns off the valve that would simulate turning off the valve on the propane tank.” – Tom Nelson, Northfield Area Fire Chief on KYMN In The Morning

The event runs tonight from 5pm to 7pm at the Fire Hall and Ames Park. For drivers, park downtown and then walk across the bridge to get over.
