The Activities Department at Northfield High School recently shared a report on the past year’s programs for students, highlighting several successes and areas they are working on this year. In one survey of families, 88% of respondents reported that students’ experience with high school activities was 4 or higher on a 5-point scale. 87% of students also said that participation in a school activity made them feel more connected to school. Activities Director John Mahal noted how significant and important these results were for the participating students.
He also highlighted one program, the Bleacher Captains, which helped organize and lead positive, respectful cheers at Raider games.
Listen to the News:
“Focusing on cheering for our team not against the other team or officials. I think a lot of people really appreciate that, and are our student athletes do a great job of that.” – John Mahal, Northfield Schools Activities Director at the 10/27/2025 School Board Meeting
Northfield has had bleacher captains for 4 years now, and Mahal said it was an area that other schools had asked him questions about, looking to replicate the program.
Going forward for this school year, Mahal said they are working on the student-coach connection and focusing on the whole student growth:
“You know wins and losses are definitely I know the scoreboard turns on we want to win no question about it but it’s everything else that leads up to that as well that those relationships are extremely important.” – John Mahal, Northfield Schools Activities Director at the 10/27/2025 School Board Meeting
