Veterans Day is also an opportunity for the community to learn about the several veteran organizations in Northfield.
Veterans of Foreign Wars:
First, let’s talk about the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). A national organization, the VFW was formed in 1899 and grew nationally over the years. Its membership consists of veterans who served in war or combat on foreign soil. The national VFW organization has been an active advocate for veterans, creating the Veterans Administration, war memorials, and bills to provide services for veterans upon returning home.
Locally, the VFW Post #4393 in Northfield consists of Northfield-area veterans and the affiliated Auxiliary organization. They own and operate the bar at 516 Division St., which also serves a meeting place for veterans and their families. Past Commander of the Northfield VFW, Tracy Closson, noted how important the sense of community was to Veterans:
Listen to the News:
“Whether you’re a veteran or a youth activity or a city organization that needs help, I say that it’s it’s kind of it’s kind of like a safe house. Between the auxiliary and the post working together as a team, we’re willing to help anybody out.” – Tracy Closson, Northfield VFW Commander on the KYMN Morning Show
Closson noted that there were several events open to the public, including Bingo, Meat Raffles, and dinners.
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon:

Another local community group is the Northfield area Beyond the Yellow Ribbon. Rev. Brent Klein of the organization said that they work to provide support directly to those in need.
“But we are here to assist active duty service members, veterans, and their families with any needs they might have. We’ve helped out with caring for lawns. One time we helped to repair a garage. We’ve helped with auto repairs.”– Rev. Brent Klein of the Northfield Beyond the Yellow Ribbon on KYMN in the Morning
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is open to all community members to join and volunteer with. Anyone can attend their meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 4pm at Trinity Lutheran Church.
