Northfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann announced that he will leave the district at the end of the 2025–26 school year to become the next Executive Director of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA). He will begin his new role on July 1, 2026.
Hillmann shared the news with district families in a letter outlining both the professional opportunity and his reflections on 16 years in Northfield. He said the MASA position will allow him to focus on developing and supporting school administrators across Minnesota, advocating for strong education policy, and working toward sustainable school funding at the state and federal levels. The role also includes promoting and elevating the work of public school educators statewide.
During his tenure, Hillmann has overseen significant academic, programmatic, and facility growth in the district. He guided the district through the very difficult Covid-19 pandemic years, and oversaw successful campaigns to secure an operating levy that funds the district at the highest level allowed, and for the long-needed renovation, or re-imagining as it has been labeled, of Northfield High School In his letter, he noted that Northfield has maintained a comprehensive academic program that compares favorably to neighboring districts while expanding extracurricular offerings. Career and technical education has seen substantial investment and modernization under his watch as well, and the district’s fine arts programs have continued to flourish.
Hillmann also emphasized the district’s major facility improvements, crediting the community for its support in long‑term infrastructure planning. He said navigating difficult societal periods alongside district staff, families, and community members has been a point of pride, and he highlighted Northfield’s consistent ranking among Minnesota’s top school districts.
On a personal note, Hillmann said he and his family have felt deeply supported by the Northfield community, calling the city an exceptional place to raise children.
The Minnesota Association of School Administrators confirmed Hillmann’s upcoming appointment and noted his extensive career experience, which includes roles as teacher, principal, and central office administrator before becoming superintendent in 2016. He has also been a longtime MASA participant, holding leadership positions within the organization and engaging in professional learning programs. Hillmann was named Minnesota Superintendent of the Year in 2023.
The Northfield School Board will soon begin the search process for the district’s next superintendent. Hillmann encouraged community participation as details are announced in the coming weeks.
