FiftyNorth and the Northfield Area Family YMCA announced this morning that they have taken a major first step toward a merger, with both boards approving an Intent to Merge as they explore forming, as they call it, “one unified community organization in Northfield.”
The two nonprofits will now begin a due diligence process before any final agreement is made. Leaders say the goal is to combine facilities, operations and membership while preserving the FiftyNorth name, identity and programming for adults age 50 and older.

“This is a really exciting moment for FiftyNorth, the YMCA, and greater Northfield,” said FiftyNorth Executive Director Marlais Brand through a joint statement issued by both organizations. Brand said the partnership would help expand services for older adults through more scholarships, programs and improved facilities.
The YMCA and FiftyNorth described the move as a way to build on their complementary strengths. FiftyNorth has long served as a fitness, social and lifelong learning hub for older adults, while the YMCA provides youth programs, wellness opportunities and community services for people of all ages.
“Both organizations share the same fundamental belief: that strong communities are built through relationships, belonging, and opportunities for people to grow,” said YMCA CEO Tyler Powell in the same statement. He said a combined organization could expand its impact while maintaining the identity and strengths of each group.
Leaders from both organizations said the proposed partnership could create what they call “a community for life,” with more intergenerational programming, expanded wellness offerings and stronger long-term sustainability.
During the planning process, programs and services at both organizations will continue without interruption. The groups will spend the coming months working on governance, operations and community engagement, while also exploring a future shared site and possible expansion.
FiftyNorth also announced it will hold a standing community meeting on the third Wednesday of each month. A joint FiftyNorth-YMCA task force will guide the due diligence process, with updates to be shared with members and the broader community.
FiftyNorth is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
