Election season officially begins on Tuesday, May 19, with the opening of the initial
candidate filing period in Minnesota. Filing for municipal, county, state and federal
offices begins at 8 a.m. on the 19 th and ends at 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 2.
Offices on the ballot in the Northfield area this year include:
- U.S. Senator
- U.S. Congress
- Minnesota Governor and Lieutenant Governor
- Minnesota Secretary of State, State Auditor & Attorney General
- State Senate and House Seats
- Rice & Dakota County Sheriffs
- Rice & Dakota County Attorneys
- Rice & Dakota County Commissioner Seats
- Three Northfield City Council Seats
Judicial seats at the Supreme Court, Appellate and District levels are also on the ballot
as are Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor seats.
Candidates for federal office must file at the Office of the Secretary of State at the State
Veterans Services Building in St. Paul. Filing for state offices can be done at the Office
of the Secretary of State or with the county auditor of the county in which the candidate
resides.
County office candidates file at their county. In Rice County, the office is at the
Government Services Building, 320 Third St. NW in Faribault. In Dakota County, the
office is at the Administration Center, 1590 Highway 55 in Hastings.
Northfield City Council candidates are to file for candidacy at Northfield City Hall.
Filing offices will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. Primary
elections are scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, with the general election set for
Tuesday, November 3.
