As warmer temperatures arrive and fishing opener weekend approaches, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for another busy summer on the water and on local trails. Sheriff’s Captain Nathan Budin, who oversees the county’s water patrol and dive team, said recent activity on area lakes is an important reminder for residents to stay alert and prepared as recreational seasons begin.
This week, deputies deployed navigational buoys on lakes throughout the county. Budin emphasized that the markers are meant to signal potential hazards such as sandbars or submerged objects, not just a single danger point. Water levels can change quickly, he noted, making previously safe routes risky just days later.
While most boaters act responsibly, the sheriff’s office still responds to breakdowns or minor incidents a few times each month. Rivers remain the most dangerous waterways, Budin said, particularly because of debris known as “strainers,” including logs left behind by severe storms.
Budin strongly encouraged boaters to wear their life jackets at all times, especially non‑inflatable models when traveling rivers.
The department has also upgraded its river rescue capabilities with a newer, shaft‑driven boat designed to safely maneuver over rocks and logs. Training with the new vessel is ongoing, and the older boat has been transferred to the City of Faribault, keeping resources local.
In addition to water safety, the sheriff’s office is expanding ATV education and enforcement. Grant funding is being used for youth ATV certification classes and expanded patrol hours, including enforcement focused on alcohol‑related offenses. Budin said the goal is visibility and prevention as side‑by‑side vehicles become increasingly popular.
Budin also highlighted upcoming observances, including National Correctional Officers Week and National Police Week, encouraging residents to recognize the service and sacrifices of law enforcement personnel across Rice County.
