The Northfield Union of Youth is preparing to open a major expansion of its longtime downtown youth center with the launch of “The Lock,” a new facility designed to meet basic needs and expand support for young people.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Lock will take place Monday at 3 p.m. at 601 Water Street South, next door to NUY’s existing youth center, The Key. The event, hosted by the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce, is open to the public.
The Lock occupies the former pharmacy building at the corner of Water and Sixth streets and was developed in response to gaps staff and youth leaders saw in services available to vulnerable young people. Youth Board President Aidan Gersky said the idea grew out of his own experiences and those of classmates at the Northfield Area Learning Center.
“A lot of my friends experienced homelessness on and off, or as a constant,” Gersky said. “Substance use and instability often followed, and there just weren’t enough accessible resources.”
The new space will serve as NUY’s centralized resource hub and includes an ADA‑accessible shower, clothing access, referrals to community services, and an on‑site mental health professional. The shower is available with no questions asked, something Gersky said is essential for dignity and employment.
“That should be a human right—to be able to stay clean and hold a job,” he said.
Executive Director Kelli Podracky said the new building allows NUY to expand without disrupting The Key, which has served as a drop‑in space for youth for more than three decades.
“The Lock strengthens the work we already do,” Podracky said. “It means young people can get connected to resources, therapy, and basic needs support in a space designed specifically for that purpose.”
Funding for the project was launched through a $160,000 grant written by youth leaders, with ongoing fundraising focused on sustaining the expanded services long‑term.
