As May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and with Memorial Day Weekend on the horizon, Rice County Public Health is reminding drivers and motorcyclists to prioritize safety as warmer weather brings more motorcycles onto local roads..
In a recent release, health officials emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers are encouraged to remain alert, look twice before turning or changing lanes, and carefully check blind spots. Maintaining a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, and driving at appropriate speeds are also key steps to prevent crashes.
Motorcyclists are urged to take extra precautions by riding sober, staying focused, and wearing full protective gear, including a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Officials also recommend rider training courses and added caution when navigating curves.
Local crash data highlights the importance of these efforts. In 2024, Rice County recorded one motorcycle-related fatality and nine serious injury crashes. Two additional serious crashes were reported in 2025.
Public health officials say increased awareness and safe practices can help reduce injuries and save lives throughout the riding season.
