The Defeat of Jesse James Days (DJJD) Committee is seeking applicants for its 2026 Ambassador and Junior Ambassador programs, inviting young residents to take part in a leadership-focused “Candidate Experience” that emphasizes service and personal growth.
Organizers stress the program is not a traditional pageant, but rather a development opportunity designed to build confidence, communication skills, and community connections. The 10-week experience begins shortly after the Fourth of July and concludes during the DJJD festival with a coronation ceremony.
During the program, candidates participate in workshops, social activities, and community events, gaining experience in public speaking, interviewing, and leadership while learning more about Northfield and its signature festival. Participants also develop friendships and network with local organizations in what organizers describe as a supportive, non-competitive environment.
At the end of the program, three ambassadors and two junior ambassadors are selected to represent Northfield for the following year. The ambassador team attends parades, festivals, and volunteer events across southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, helping promote the city and its largest annual celebration.
Eligible ambassador candidates must be between 16 and 21 years old and have ties to the Northfield community, while junior ambassador candidates must be ages 6 to 8 and meet local residency or school requirements. Scholarships are awarded upon completion of the year, including $2,500 for ambassadors.
A flexible “experience-only” option is also available for participants who wish to gain skills without committing to yearlong appearances.
The Defeat of Jesse James Days festival, held each September, commemorates the town’s role in foiling the 1876 James-Younger Gang bank raid and remains one of Minnesota’s largest community celebrations.
