A new summer golf tournament aimed at raising funds and awareness for Ruth’s House of Hope will tee off June 23 at Legacy Golf Course, bringing community members together for a day of fun in support of women and children facing crisis.
The first-ever event, set for a noon shotgun start, marks an expansion of fundraising efforts for the nonprofit, which has served the area for 21 years. Organizers say the tournament will blend lighthearted activities with a serious mission.
“It’s not real serious golf,” said Sue Stout, outreach coordinator for Ruth’s House. “We’re going to have fun things on the course, like hitting a marshmallow off the tee, along with contests and prizes.”
Among those prizes is a hole-in-one challenge offering a chance to win a 2026 GMC Terrain, along with other giveaways such as golf gear and gift credits.
Ruth’s House of Hope operates a shelter in Faribault for women and children experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, substance use disorder and poverty. The organization also runs Sarah’s House in Northfield, a sober living home for women transitioning from inpatient treatment.
“We’re working every day to help people get back on their feet in a safe, healing environment,” Stout said.
Residents receive individualized support, including help securing housing, employment, education and financial stability. There are no strict time limits on stays, allowing women and their children to remain as long as needed.
“That could be months or even a year,” Stout said. “We help them through every single step.”
Development manager Grace Lopez Johnson said the organization depends heavily on community partnerships and donor support, from local businesses to churches and service groups.
“It really has a communal feel,” Lopez Johnson said. “Everybody is helping in some way or another.”
The shelter also emphasizes care for children, offering services such as school enrollment assistance and mental health support. Staff often help parents balance work and responsibilities.
In addition to golf, the June 23 event will include meals, a silent auction and volunteer opportunities. Proceeds will support ongoing operations and future goals, including expanding capacity and improving facilities.
