Rice County warns residents as extreme heat expected this weekend

By Rich Larson

Rice County Public Health is urging residents to take precautions as temperatures are forecast to climb as high as 97 degrees this weekend, bringing dangerous levels of heat and humidity to southern Minnesota.

Officials emphasized that heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the United States, but those fatalities are largely preventable with the right precautions. Residents are encouraged to closely monitor weather forecasts and stay alert for heat advisories throughout the summer months.

To reduce the risk of heat-related illness, public health experts recommend drinking plenty of fluids, limiting strenuous outdoor activity, and spending as much time as possible indoors or in air-conditioned environments. Those who must work or spend time outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas and remain well-hydrated.

Authorities are also reminding residents to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles and to always “look before you lock,” as temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly to deadly levels.

Public health officials warn that heat exhaustion can quickly become serious if left untreated. Symptoms include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea, headache, and a rapid heart rate. Anyone experiencing these signs should move to a cooler area, drink fluids, and rest. Medical attention is recommended if symptoms persist beyond an hour.

More severe cases can lead to heat stroke, a life-threatening emergency marked by confusion, hot or dry skin, seizures, or loss of consciousness. In such situations, residents should call 911 immediately.

For those without air conditioning, several community buildings—including local libraries, city halls, and community centers—are open as cooling shelters.

Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.
