Age Friendly Northfield is teaming up with the Friends of Downtown Northfield to launch a community fundraising effort aimed at adding eight sturdy, accessible benches along Division Street.
The project comes after a recent grant application was unsuccessful, but organizers say they remain committed to improving downtown accessibility for older adults and people with mobility challenges.
“We were disappointed,” said C.C. Linstroth of Age Friendly Northfield. “But we’re not giving up because so much happens on Division, and we want to make sure our downtown is a welcoming place.”
The proposed benches would feature aluminum frames and maintenance-free recycled plastic resin slats. Unlike traditional wooden benches, they would require little upkeep while providing stable seating with armrests that help users safely sit and stand.
Linstroth said the need is growing as more older residents continue to enjoy downtown shopping, dining and community events but may need an occasional place to rest.
“Who doesn’t need a break when you’re exploring the community’s social hub?” she said. “The lack of public seating disproportionately impacts older adults and people with disabilities who may need more frequent rests as they navigate downtown.”
The benches could also improve safety, particularly during Minnesota’s snowy and icy months when walking conditions are more challenging. Linstroth noted that regular opportunities to sit and recover are important for many residents.
Under the proposal, businesses, building owners, civic organizations, families or individuals could sponsor a bench. Donors would have the option of adding a commemorative plaque recognizing their contribution. While final costs are still being determined, organizers estimate sponsorships could range from roughly $1,500 to $2,000 per bench, with Age Friendly Northfield helping offset some expenses when possible.
Beyond accessibility, Linstroth sees the project as an investment in community connection.
“It would be great if people sat on these benches, smiled at the person next to them and said hello,” she said. “Today’s efforts are what will make tomorrow’s downtown a great place to be.”
Organizers expect to finalize fundraising details and bench placement plans in the coming weeks.
