The Northfield Police Department will host its first community open house this evening, inviting residents to tour the station, meet officers and see the equipment they use on the job.
The event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the police department, 1615 Riverview Drive. Police Chief Jeff Schroepfer said the department will open the parts of the station it can to visitors, including the training room, booking room, break room and garage.
Schroepfer said some residents have never been inside the station. The open house gives them a chance to see the building and talk with officers in a more relaxed setting than a call for service.
The family friendly evening will include cornhole, an inflatable obstacle course and a seatbelt simulator. Schroepfer said the simulator gives riders a sense of the force their bodies experience in a crash, even at a relatively low speed. Officers will also demonstrate Tasers and drones and share information about the department’s bike patrol and bicycle safety.
North Memorial Health Air Care is scheduled to land a helicopter at about 6 p.m. and depart around 7 p.m. The visit depends on weather and whether the crew is needed for a call.
Northfield EMS, Northfield Area Fire and Rescue Service and Southeast Toward Zero Death will also take part. Representatives will bring vehicles and equipment for visitors to see and will be available to answer questions. Food trucks will offer food and beverages for purchase.
Schroepfer described the evening as a chance for people to see the tools and resources officers use, as well as the station itself. Visitors can stop by for a tour, watch a demonstration or speak with officers and community partners.
The open house is free to attend. Food and beverages from the trucks will be available for purchase.
