Northfield-Dundas is one of five places nationwide to receive a 2026 Runner Friendly Community designation from the Road Runners Club of America.
The designation recognizes communities that provide safe, accessible places to run and support local running through trails, events and partnerships. The club cited paved trails connecting Northfield and Dundas, pedestrian infrastructure and the work of local governments, businesses, schools and running organizations.
The Carleton College Cowling Arboretum’s more than 15 miles of natural-surface trails and the Mill Towns State Trail were among the area’s running options highlighted in the announcement. The club also pointed to races and weekly social runs organized by Your Pace or Mine Running Club.
“We’re excited to see Northfield and Dundas recognized for the many ways our communities support running and active living,” said Amy Nugent, president of Your Pace or Mine and race director for the Mill Towns Race Series.
Nugent said the designation reflects investments in trails and events by many people and organizations. Community events, including the Mill Towns Race Series and Turkey Trot, bring together runners, volunteers, businesses and sponsors, according to the city’s announcement.
Northfield-Dundas joins Austin, Texas; Columbia, Missouri; McKinney, Texas; and Reston, Virginia, among this year’s honorees. The additions bring the number of designated Runner Friendly Communities to 49 nationwide. Minnesota’s other designees are Minneapolis-St. Paul and Rochester.
Your Pace or Mine officials will present the designation plaque to Northfield Mayor Erica Zweifel at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Memorial Park, 214 South First St. in Dundas. The ceremony will take place before the Mill Towns Race Series, and the public is invited to attend and cheer on the runners.
The Road Runners Club of America evaluates applicants on running infrastructure, accessibility, safety, government involvement and opportunities for people of different ages and abilities to participate.
