All-Wheel Drive/May 6

Wow. What a great wrap-up to a crazy week. Today’s show featured not one, but two fantastic in-studio appearances. First up, Mr. Charlie Parr, who is in town to perform tonight as part of a tasty triple bill at the First United Church of Christ (UCC) — along with The Holy Broke and hometown faves Matt Arthur & The Bratlanders. You can find everything you ever want to know about Charlie on his website. And be sure to check out his new releases, Stumpjumper and his special Record Store Day EP, I Ain’t Dead Yet.

Admittedly, I’ve never met Charlie before — nor have I heard any of his music (although I’m certainly familiar with his world-wide renown). As such, it was such a treat to chat with him and hear him perform while seated only inches away. Lovely music and crazy cool guitar playing on his custom Mule. Stunning! You can hear our session here. Charlie performed:

Ain’t Dead Yet
Remember Me If I Forget
Jaybird

Then, we quickly shuffled around some chairs and passed the baton to members of Wilkinson James, a great Twin Cities outfit whose sound is reminiscent of the best of yesteryear’s folk, bluegrass, Americana and swing influences. The band is appearing tonight at the Tavern Lounge (and again later this summer at The Contented Cow in July and during DJJD weekend). They have also been working busily on their new forthcoming EP release, Abandon on the House of Mercy label. It is always a pleasure to chat with Liz Wilkinson and AJ Scheiber, who were also joined today by bandmate Dan Andreasen. You can hear our session here. Liz and AJ performed:

You Won’t Break Me Again
Heart On My Sleeve
One Stoplight Town (solo by AJ)
Myrtle Beach 1985
