Many points to ponder on school opening during a pandemic
There is a lot to consider when, at some point, students or at least some of them, return to school. Social distancing is a key component. Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann explained, “from a facilities perspective I think we’re in about as good a position as we can be in. When you think of the average classroom being 8 to 900 sq. ft. you can fit between 9 and 13 students”. As opposed to the 25 to 30. Passing through the hallways will be challenging, Hillmann said, “if you let all of the students transition at one time it’s something that’s going to be very difficult. Thinking about how we do lunch, thinking about how we have students come into the building and what kind of health check is going to happen. Whether or not we need to do a temperature screening on site? And of course that would have to be wherever the student first encounters their school experience”. The health check will probably have to be at the bus, which is a whole other issue. There are various perspectives from families and staff. Some are deciding to not send their child to school while some staff, with underlying health issues, would rather teach from home. Hillmann said they’re listening, taking feedback and promising the community to do whatever they can to keep all safe and will implement changes as needed.
Legal fireworks and where they can be used
“The long and short of it is, if it flies in the air or explodes it’s illegal”, Northfield police Chief Monte Nelson on fireworks as we approach Independence Day. Another possible little known fact is those legal fireworks must be lit on private property. He added, “you shouldn’t be doing it in a public street, you shouldn’t be doing it in a public park. The whole idea was that you can do it on your own property”. If you’re going to light off fireworks, make sure you have a bucket of water nearby and supervise your children, be mindful of your neighbors too.
UCare commercial to be shot in Nfld
UCare has chosen Northfield as the location for their next commercial! Chief Nelson confirms a one day shoot will take place on Tuesday, June 30th along Division St. He said, “we won’t shut down the street for the whole afternoon. We’ll maybe shut down a block for ten minutes, they’ll film and then take time off to reset their cameras and people and everything and we’ll open traffic back up”. There will be only a few places where they’ll have No Parking signs up. The filming will take place on Division Street between 5th and 2nd Streets and on Bridge Square between Water and Division between 1 pm and 7 pm according to Chamber President Lisa Peterson. Here are maps received from Peterson on the film crews set up:
