The Northfield City Council meets tonight, the most significant item on the agenda is related to the Water Treatment Project. After rejecting the initial design in January, the council continued to express concerns with the alternative options presented by city staff in February.

As part of the project funding, the city received $3.9 million in federal funds for the Reverse Osmosis portion of the plant. At tonight’s meeting, the City Council will decide where to redirect the federal money to. The funds have to go to a similar project, and in this case, the proposal is a water tower in the Northwest Area.

The meeting will start with several presentations, including the Oath of Office for a new member of the Northfield Police Department; then, there will be a presentation from the Masonic Charities of Fire Suppression tools for the Police and Fire Department. The last presentation is about the Youth First Activities, including the Mayor’s Youth Council, Youth Bank, and the Northfield Community College Collaborative.

After the presentations and the federal funding for the water treatment plant, the council will consider an Annexation Agreement between the city and Northfield Township. The agreement would cover a portion of the southern edge of Northfield and all of its western side. The growth of Northfield is constrained in many directions, with Dundas limiting growth to the Southeast and the two college campuses limiting growth on the eastern and Western edge of the city. This has led to the area along the western side of the city along Jefferson Parkway being considered one of the main areas of growth for the future. An annexation agreement is one of the major steps in that process.

The last item on the agenda will be approving a lease till the end of the year between the city and FiftyNorth Senior Center for the Northfield Community Resource Center.

The public is welcome to attend in person or watch online. To watch online, go to northfieldmn.gov and click the “Agenda & Minutes” button in the middle of the home page. From there, find tonight’s meeting date to watch, as well as a copy of the agenda and other meeting documents.

The meeting starts tonight at 6pm in the Council Chambers of City Hall.
