In September, the Northfield City Council considered a proposal to lower the residential speed limit in Northfield. The current speed limit for most roads is 30 mph; under the new proposal, it would be lowered to 20 or 25 mph.City Engineer and Public Works Director David Bennett stated that they would conduct a review of all the roads to build a framework to decide on the new speed limit:
“This would really kind of establish the framework on how we would set the local roads speed limits and how they would be determined, determined in the community, and which roads potentially would be eligible.” – David Bennett, Northfield Public Works Director/City Engineer at the 9/16/2025 City Council Meeting
The plan would cost approximately $75,000 to pay for the study and new signs. The funds would come fro the Capital Reserve Fund.

Several City Council members voiced their support for the change, including Councilor Chad Beumer:
“If I’m throwing out a speed limit number, I would say 20. I have driven around town at 20 miles an hour. It does just take a minute or so longer to get there.” – Chad Beumer, Northfield City Council member, at the 9/16/2025 City Council Meeting
