The Northfield School Board last week heard the proposal for next year’s academic calendar. The calendar has students in school for 173 days next year, and Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann, says that overall it’s a normal calendar with one unique issue:
“One of the challenges of the 2026-2027 calendars is Labor Day is as late as it can be next year and so once you get to that point of starting school on the Tuesday after Labor Day it is a fairly traditional calendar and just pushes us out to finishing on June 11th.“ – Dr. Matt Hillmann, Northfield Schools Superintendent at the 11/24/2025 School Board Meeting
While Labor Day this year was as early as possible, September 1st, next year it’s as late as possible, on September 7th. The delay to the start of the school year means an overall later end to the school year on June 11th.
Listen to the News:
The Board is set to approve the calendar at their next meeting on December 8th.
Hillmann stated that they will also be bringing forward the 2027-2028 School Calendar in a few months, hoping to return to a system of planning two years in advance the calendar, something that had been disrupted by COVID-19.
“Before the pandemic we had gotten on the board adopting two calendars at a time and then we got out of that cycle for the obvious reasons of having to adapt and adjust to some of the changes during the pandemic“ – Dr. Matt Hillmann, Northfield Schools Superintendent at the 11/24/2025 School Board Meeting
