Northfield School District Sees Strong Gains in Parent, Caregiver Survey

By Rich Larson

Northfield Public Schools reported continued improvement in family satisfaction following the release of its annual parent and caregiver survey results, Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann said in a recent interview.

The district, which has been administering a series of annual surveys since approximately 2017, uses the parent and caregiver survey alongside internal and employee experience surveys to gauge district performance and guide improvement efforts. This year’s survey saw a significant jump in participation, with 702 responses, up from 457 the previous year.

“We made an intentional effort to boost participation,” Hillmann said, noting that survey fatigue can be a challenge for families. “We’re really pleased to see that increase.”

Along with higher participation, the district also saw gains in overall satisfaction. The average rating on a five-point scale rose from 4.1 last year to 4.18, marking the fourth consecutive year of improvement. Hillmann said the trend reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.

Another key metric, known as the “top box” score — representing responses that received the highest possible rating — increased by nearly 10 percentage points, from 41.6 percent to 51.2 percent. Meanwhile, the “top two box” score, which combines the highest two ratings, climbed to 78.4 percent, approaching the district’s goal of 80 percent.

Survey responses also highlighted several areas of strength. Families overwhelmingly agreed that Northfield schools provide a safe learning environment and place a high priority on student learning.

“Safety is the entry point,” Hillmann said. “Families need to feel confident their children are cared for, and that their learning comes first.”

However, the survey also identified areas for growth, particularly in communication. Hillmann noted the district continues working to provide more consistent positive feedback to families through phone calls, emails and notes.

“Parents want timely, constructive feedback about their children,” he said. “We’re focused on strengthening that connection and highlighting students’ strengths.”

The survey also included an open-ended “shout-out” question, allowing respondents to recognize staff members for their contributions. District leaders plan to use that feedback to celebrate employee achievements and reinforce a strengths-based culture.

Overall, Hillmann said the results reflect both progress and opportunity.

“We’re thrilled with the direction we’re heading,” he said. “But we know there’s always more work to do.”
