Northfield residents will gather tomorrow to commemorate Juneteenth with the annual community-centered celebration sponsored by the Northfield School District, focused on education, reflection and connection.
The free event is scheduled to run from 11:30am to 1:30pm tomorrow at the Northfield High School auditorium. Organizers encourage community members of all ages to attend the program, which aims to highlight the significance of the holiday while fostering local dialogue.
This year’s celebration will feature a panel of speakers representing education leaders from across Minnesota. The panel includes retiring Bridgewater Elementary School Principal Dr. Nancy Antoine, St. Louis Park Assistant Superintendent Dr. Quennell Cooper, Mankato East High School Principal Akram Osman, and St. Paul Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Stacie Stanley. The discussion will be moderated by Rich Torres and is expected to explore leadership, equity and community impact.
A complimentary lunch will be provided to the first 75 attendees beginning at 11:30 a.m., with the formal program set to begin at 12:15 p.m. The event is funded through grants and private donations and remains open to the public at no cost.
Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
Over time, Juneteenth has grown into a national day of remembrance and celebration, honoring African American history, freedom and resilience. It became an official federal holiday in 2021 and is often marked by community gatherings, educational events and cultural celebrations.
District organizers organizers said the Northfield event continues that tradition by bringing people together to reflect on the past while building a more inclusive future.
