Northfield Road Project Will Enter Second Phase July 20

By Rich Larson

The City of Northfield will begin Phase 2 of its 2026 Mill and Overlay and Mill Towns State Trail Improvements Project on Monday, July 20, with work expected to continue through early August.

The second phase will focus on Jefferson Parkway from Wilcox Boulevard East to Maple Street, including the Jefferson Parkway and Maple Street intersection. Additional work will take place on Maple Street from Meadow View Drive to Jefferson Parkway and on Maple Court.

During construction, the affected streets will remain open to local traffic only. Motorists traveling through the area will be directed to detour routes using Division Street, Woodley Street, Prairie Street, Jefferson Parkway, Lake Drive and Maple Street.

According to the city, the project is designed to improve roadway conditions and extend the lifespan of the streets. Planned upgrades include roadway resurfacing, new and improved sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, and additional safety features at several intersections. The work also includes construction of a segment of the Mill Towns State Trail.

The overall project has been divided into three phases. Phase 1 is already underway. City officials said Phase 3 is expected to begin in early August and continue into early September. That phase will cover Jefferson Parkway between Wilcox Boulevard East and Division Street (TH 246).

Northfield officials said the improvements reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing transportation infrastructure for residents, pedestrians and trail users.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution in construction zones, reduce their speed and follow all posted detours. The city also reminded residents and visitors not to enter streets that have been closed with barriers or traffic cones.

City officials encourage community members to stay informed about construction progress and traffic impacts by visiting the project webpage and signing up for project updates.

The roadway and trail improvements are expected to provide safer travel conditions and long-term infrastructure benefits for the Northfield community.
