Northfield Union of Youth Expands Services, Eyes ‘Campus of Hope’ Future

By Rich Larson

The Northfield Union of Youth (NUY) is celebrating a season of growth as its newest facility, The Lock, settles into operation and plans begin to take shape for an ambitious expansion that could create a “Campus of Hope” in downtown Northfield.

NUY Executive Director Kelli Podracky said The Lock, which officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in May, is already serving youth exactly as intended. The facility provides showers, quiet meeting spaces, educational support and private areas for young people facing difficult circumstances.

“We hoped it would fill a gap, and it’s doing that,” Podracky said. “Young people are using the space for everything from working on their GEDs to having important conversations about challenges in their lives.”

The project moved from concept to completion in less than a year, thanks to strong community support and a dedicated team of volunteers, donors and contractors.

Meanwhile, demand remains high for Wallflower House, NUY’s transitional housing program for young adults ages 18 to 24 experiencing homelessness. The home is currently full, with residents working toward employment, educational goals and long-term independence. In addition to the house, NUY continues to operate its Wallflower Project host-home program, placing youth with community members who provide temporary housing and support.

Looking ahead, NUY is conducting a feasibility study for a potential capital campaign centered on the “Campus of Hope” concept. The organization is exploring the purchase of the house immediately west of The Key, NUY’s longtime youth center.

The opportunity comes as the lease for the current Wallflower House is set to end in February 2028 and the property owner plans to sell. Podracky said the neighboring house could improve services by offering four private bedrooms and a separate studio-style apartment, allowing residents to gradually transition toward independent living while building rental history and budgeting skills.

“We’re trying to make smart decisions for the future,” Podracky said. “This could be a tremendous opportunity for the youth we serve.”
