Name released of man suspected in overdose death; Fire called “suspicious” at Faribault PetSmart; Northfield man couldn’t run fast enough; Climate Action Plan packs chambers

By Teri Knight, News Director

Northfield Deputy Police Chief Mark Elliott reports that the Hennepin County Medical Examiner has released the name of the man found deceased last week in an apartment on Division Street. He is 39-year-old Robert Todd Schueneman of Northfield. The official cause of death is pending toxicology reports. There is no further information at this time as the investigation continues.

Fire called “suspicious” at Faribault PetSmart

The Faribault Fire Department responded yesterday near 5 p.m. to a suspicious fire at the PetSmart in the Faribault West Mall. Fire Chief Dustin Dienst reports that people were evacuating the building and light smoke could be seen in the back of the business. Police officers made entry to locate the fire, evacuate animals and give the fire department a size-up. Firefighters determined the fire was in a bathroom and the sprinkler system had extinguished it. The sprinkler system was shut down and firefighters used squeegees to clean up the water. Faribault police did an on-scene investigation and the State Fire

Marshall’s office was contacted as the fire is suspicious. Dienst commented, “For the second time this week a sprinkler system did what it was designed to do. The employees of the business also did a good job of evacuating the customers so that no one was in danger.”

Northfield man couldn’t run fast enough

A Northfield man who fled officers on foot is in jail. On Sunday, 20-year-old Tayden James Lee Nadeau tried to outrun the Northfield Police after officers conducted a search of a vehicle sitting in front of The Key after hours. The officers could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. Nadeau (nay-doh) emptied his pockets and officers found he had a handful of $20, $5, and $1 bills in his pocket. He told them it was tip money. Just as the officer was about to conduct a pat-search, Nadeau took off running. He was found hiding in bushes behind Carlson Capital Management. A search of the vehicle revealed a black backpack with three baggies of marijuana, another plastic bag of THC wax, three full cartridges of THC oil, baggies and a scale. There was also $1776.00 in cash. Nadeau is charged with 5th degree drug sale and two counts of 5th degree felony possession as well as fleeing an officer. His bail was set at a $1,000 with conditions. His court appearance is October 22, 2019.

Climate Action Plan packs chambers

The Northfield Council Chambers were packed last night to hear the draft Climate Action Plan. Abby Finnes from the Great Plains Institute shared the plan, which is quite detailed. I will post it on our website at noon today. The plan has been developed over the last 18 months with input from over 50 citizens serving on six subcommittees. The overall message is “inaction is no longer an option” on climate change. The plan calls for the city to be carbon free by 2040 and shares what the city’s greenhouse gas emissions are now and where the majority of them are coming from. City-wide, the most come from commercial and industrial electricity and natural gas. As for city operations, the WWTP [Wastewater Treatment Plant] emits the most at just over 50{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9}. Xcel Energy has lowered their emissions and continues to do so while working with companies and cities on various programs. There were multiple people who spoke at the open mic including Matt Roen who said cost was a concern, adding, “What I want you to keep in mind is the cost of not doing this.” While everyone agreed something needs to be done, one citizen commented on what it costs the individual who is on a fixed income for the changes recommended. About 95{b5761be34e80a16b6d0e4dabc1869c131a263f96a745c82bebdd3b8a4330bfa9} of the people in the Council Chambers were very enthusiastic about the plan but were concerned that it not sit on a shelf. They will be officially voting on the plan November 5, 2019. Mayor Rhonda Pownell and City Administrator Martig Ben will be in studio at 7:20 a.m. with a recap of the entire meeting.  Northfield_Final Draft_10_10 Climate Action Plan  Northfield Sustainble Energy for All Energy Subcommittee Report_May 2019  Greenhouse gas assessment for City operations 15 to 17
