Northfield Ice Arena Solar Panels Will Be Installed and Connected

By Rich Larson

The City of Northfield has cleared a major hurdle in the construction of the new Hasse Ryt-Way Arena, announcing that the facility’s planned solar energy system will move forward after Xcel Energy approved the project’s connection to the electrical grid.

City officials said the solar panels have been ordered and will be installed during the final phase of construction. The approval resolves a months-long uncertainty surrounding the project after an initial interconnection application was denied despite the arena’s design meeting Xcel’s solar capacity requirements.

According to city officials, additional engineering review and updated system information revealed that the arena could be served by a different electrical feeder near the facility that met the utility’s requirements. The city and Xcel Energy continued working through the technical issues and ultimately reached a solution that allows the solar array to proceed as originally envisioned.

The development represents a significant win for both the project’s sustainability goals and its long-term financial outlook. Mayor Erica Zweifel said the arena was designed to serve the community for generations while reducing operating costs and advancing Northfield’s environmental objectives.

The project has also benefited from changes to federal incentive programs. New domestic-content requirements for solar equipment initially increased costs, but those requirements also qualified the project for an additional 10% federal incentive. As a result, officials estimate the solar panel portion of the project will cost about $70,000 less than originally anticipated.

Once operational, the revised solar array is expected to generate approximately 485,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Based on current utility rates, the system is projected to save roughly $51,000 in electricity costs during its first year and pay for itself in about eight years. Over a 20-year period, city projections show more than $935,000 in net savings.

The solar installation is part of a broader sustainability strategy for the arena. The facility is being designed to achieve LEED Silver certification and will feature energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, advanced refrigeration technology, LED lighting, water conservation measures, improved indoor air quality, an electric ice resurfacer and extensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure, including the city’s first public Level 3 fast charger.

Meanwhile, construction remains on schedule and on budget. City officials expect building turnover in early August, with the transition from the existing arena taking place later that month. The new Hasse Ryt-Way Arena is scheduled to open in mid-September through a partnership involving the City of Northfield, City of Dundas, Northfield School District, private donors and the Northfield Hockey Association.
